The Heartfelt Story Behind Azalea House

The Birth of a Dream

Azalea House was born from love — not just as a business, but as a deeply personal tribute to someone who meant the world to me. My aunt played a special role in my life growing up. She always made it a point to spend dedicated time with me and my siblings. One of our most treasured routines was our Sunday trips to Target. We didn’t go for anything in particular — we’d just mosey through the aisles, laughing, browsing, and enjoying each other’s company. Those simple moments made lasting memories and reflected the kind of quiet, intentional love she gave so generously.

She lived with Multiple Sclerosis for many years, and our entire family was deeply involved in caring for her as the disease progressed. We adapted her home, helped with her daily needs, and stood by her side with all the love we could offer. But eventually, her condition required 24-hour care — more than we could manage on our own. It was then that we made the incredibly difficult decision to place her in a residential care facility.

Thankfully, the one we found was small, warm, and full of compassion. In her final months, she received the kind of care that felt personal and human. She passed away at just 66 years old — far too young — but surrounded by people who made her feel seen and cared for.

After her passing, I couldn’t stop thinking about her home — the same house where she built those precious memories with us. It felt only right to transform it into a place where others could experience the same kind of warmth and dignity she received. That’s how Azalea House came to be: a home rooted in love, family, and the quiet beauty of shared time.

The name itself holds meaning. Azalea flowers symbolize love, well-being, and are often seen as a sign of remembrance — all things that reflect both the spirit of my aunt and the heart of the home we’ve created in her honor.

Challenges and Triumphs

The road to opening Azalea House was anything but smooth. What began as a simple renovation quickly became a lesson in patience and perseverance. The COVID-19 pandemic brought nationwide delays in construction, making it difficult to source materials and coordinate licensed contractors. Timelines stretched, inspections were rescheduled, and progress felt painfully slow at times.

Just as we were preparing to open, the Eaton Fires swept through the area. Our neighborhood was impacted, and although our facility was not destroyed, the smoke and environmental concerns forced us to pause and reassess. We prioritized testing for air quality, lead, and asbestos to ensure that our home would be safe and healthy for our future residents.

Despite the setbacks, we pressed on — because the mission was always bigger than the obstacles. Every delay only reaffirmed our commitment to creating a space that felt like home. And now, Azalea House stands proudly as a symbol of resilience, purpose, and the kind of healing that only a home with heart can offer.

We collaborate with local artists, health educators, musicians, and schools to bring intergenerational and community-based programming into the home.
